From
the Dust Jacket:
“The fishing tug
plowed
through the Lake Michigan night carrying Jonas and Sally to the
mainland
and her father to jail.”
Surprised to be called
to save this virgin island, surprised to be loving such a sensual and
stubborn woman, Jonas brings his youthful mix of complete certainty and
utter ambiguity to his unsettling task.
Jonas' innocence gives
way to life -- damaged and swarming with wisdom and violence, both
coming out of unexpected places. He witnesses the stark horror of abuse
taking hold
in Sally, the woman he loves.
He fights to hold vile
darkness at bay -- by his own naive faith; the bitter wisdom of
Jackson, a failed
man of God; and Daniel, the father of the island who pilots the fishing
boat
and “does the funerals and weddings on the island.”
Abuse, with its long
and tensilestrong reach is ruining Sally and Samantha -- and the people
who
love them.
Can redemption come?
Can love prevail? Is forgiveness thinkable? Does faith ever jar such
embedded terror?
Foss, with exquisite
care and tenacity, yields his characters to the raw energy of their
experiences. His touch is sure; his revelations startlingly
captivating. A hauntingly
hopeful first novel.

Praise for Jonas and Sally
“Jonas and Sally is
cast in the simplest of language, which is almost always the best
language for a
story. And a wonderful story it is, one that ultimately brings hope and
healing
to any who have suffered under a parent's mistreatment -- and
particularly
to women subjected to abuse by a father. Though this might seem a tall
topic, Mr. Foss handles it with forgiving forthrightness, through
characters displaying such pristine naiveté (I almost said
innocence, but that would be
untrue to the novel) that their actions are compelling at every turn.
This is a novel of redemption and
hope, of the Christian life enacted rather than preached about, and it
stands
as the accomplishment of a brave new talent.
Jonas
and Sally is a novel you will not forget, and Mr.
Foss a writer you can trust.”

“Rich Foss's new novel is disarming, full of richness and depth. It is a timely
and valuable story with its themes of sexual brokenness and healing
from abuse. "
