Blueberry Field Report - updated 03 July 2009, 11:54 AM

Berry Quality: Good Picking Ease: Moderate Stage: Ramping Up

Cool temperatures earlier this week and heavy picking has temporarily reduced the blueberry supply.
We will be open this Saturday, but you should not expect to pick large quantities.
The bushes are loaded; it should be a great blueberry season, but you need to watch for not-quite-ripe berries.
We haven't reached peak picking yet.

This Saturday we will have lots of blueberries, what might be the last strawberries of the season, a few black raspberries, new potatoes, sugar snap and snow peas, herbs, kohlrabi, maybe a little rhubarb, and a good variety of Plow Creek Bakery goods. We have lowered the price for blueberries: 2 pints for $11 or 6 pints for $30.

Flats full of blueberries for marketSerious blueberries are here. We plan to bring lots to both Peoria and Princeton on Saturday.

blueberries ready to pickBlueberry U-pick will open Saturday morning at 7:00. Most rows are not fully ripe, but there are some berries ready in lots of rows. If you aren’t among the first to arrive, you may have to pick over a number of bushes to get what you want, but there are pretty good quantities available. Please read how to pick blueberries before coming.

We picked 56 pints of blueberries today which we plan to bring to Princeton tomorrow, Saturday. The storm chased us in - there were a few more pints to pick. With the heat more blueberries will ripen soon, so I expect we will have plenty also on Tuesday and we may be able to open up for u-pick in about a week.

Almost ripe blueberriesAs we were weeding the blueberries today, we found an occasional ripe berry. Very good! We might well have enough for me to bring a few half-pints to Princeton market on Saturday. It looks like it will be a great blueberry year, with many branches bending way down under the weight of the berries even though they mostly haven’t reached full size yet. I expect it will still be another two weeks before we will open for u-pick.

Little green blueberries on the bushLittle green strawberry on the plant Yesterday I saw my first strawberries and blueberries of the year. They are small and green, but growing. I’d estimate our first strawberries for sale at either the June 2 or June 6 Princeton Farmers’ Market, with the first blueberries available about two weeks later.

It won’t be a fantastic blackberry year, but they are fairly plentiful now, and they are big and delicious. We plan to be open for picking Wednesday and Saturday. You may pick the declining blueberries on the same trip.

A good turn out today picked most of the blueberries that were ready to pick. We have changed the picking schedule to be closed tomorrow, Thursday. There should be some, but not many, available Saturday. Blueberry picking will now be self-serve. That means there may be no one available to show you the best place to pick — you will have to look. “Seek and you shall find,” is an appropriate quotation. If you pick on a bush, please pick it clean, but you may skip around rather than follow flags as we usually do.

Blueberry picking is closed today. Another 2 1/2 inches of rain this morning has made the road too muddy. Expect great picking Monday.

We just had 2 inches of rain in about a half hour, making Blueberry Hill road a real mess. We have closed the blueberry picking until Saturday. We expect the road to be fine by then.

We will be open for Blueberry U-Pick on Thursday evening from 4-8 pm. Less than half of the field will be available since we had heavy picking today and we need to reserve some rows for berries to send to the Princeton and Peoria farmers’ markets. There are plenty of berries ripening, so if you want to pick large quantities, next week would probably be a better time. If you just want a smaller amount, there are still some good sections for picking.

A huge crowd this morning has done a good job picking all the ripe blueberries. We have no more to offer today or tomorrow. We will open again Monday.
