Accompanying indigenous Christians in the Argentine Chaco

About Argentina

Argentina is on the eastern side of South America, bordered by Chile, Uruguay, Brazil and Paraguay.

Throughout the history of Argentina the dominant society has devalued native peoples, leaving many feeling  ambiguous about their own culture.   Indigenous believers have sought to express their Christian faith in authentic cultural forms and their own languages.

Mennonite Mission Network has been serving among the  indigenous people of the Argentine Chaco since 1943.

Assignment

Regular pastoral visitation in indigenous communities and churches is the heart of the ministry of the international team working in the Argentine Chaco.  Ruth Anne accompanies women's prayer circles and helps preserve community and church histories.  Richard's focus is with a team of translators preparing a new Toba version of the New Testament.  They also expect to have responsibilities in the publication and distribution of a quarterly bulletin in various native languages and Spanish.  They are excited to be witnesses to the moving of the Spirit in the indigenous churches.

Pray for

  • the Lord's grace as Richard and Ruth Anne begin learning the Toba language.
  • Richard and Ruth Anne's ability to value and affirm the persons with whom they come in contact and their culture.
