the Way of Christ
Illinois & Wisconsin
A lay led, Believers Church, Cursillo movement of
Church of the Brethren, Brethren Church & Mennonite Christians
The Way of Christ is a three day event where participants share
in a vibrant portrait of the grace filled life Jesus lived and taught.
It is a time where the hope of Christ is celebrated, the believer's
purpose in life named, the love of God in Jesus proclaimed.
Life in Christ is built upon the grace of God and the believers trust of God to be shaped and transformed by that grace.
WHAT HAPPENS AT A WEEKEND?
The Way of Christ weekend begins on a Thursday evening and ends on Sunday evening. While you are attending you spend three busy but enjoyable days. You live and study together with other believers sharing in much singing, prayer, worship, and discussion. Your discussion will center around talks given by laity and clergy. This sharing will be about the grace of God, its reality in your life, how you can live the life of grace, and imparting this grace to others. You have the opportunity to claim anew your covenant with Christ and celebrate the leading of Jesus for his followers through the congregation.
Christ has come to give us life in all its fullness.
PURPOSE OF THE WAY OF CHRIST
In today's world, does our faith permeate all areas of our lives? Can it be sustained in our living? Can it grow there? Can it transform the hearts of the people with whom we share our lives? Is it relevant for this time? Those in the Way of Christ movement think so!
The Way of Christ movement does not propose a new type of spirituality. It reinforces a simple intentional one through which the believers grace-filled life may. in a natural loving way, be lived and shared with others.
There is a way that
leads to life...
Jesus said, " I came that they may have life and have it abundantly."
WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
Believers! Believers:
• who know their spiritual lives need strengthening;
• who strive to be credible in prayer, study. and sharing their faith;
• who understand being Christian involves responsibility:
• who seek both the spiritual foundation and moral reserve to purposefully live their lives;
• who follow Jesus in an on-going manner in their daily living.
In other words, if you have a strong faith and still seek to grow in your relationship to God and enable others to do the same, you are probably just the person to attend! Contact us to make arrangements to be part of a weekend.
"For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God -- not the result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are what he has made us, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand to be our way of life"
-Ephesians 2:8-10
"God has created me to do Him some definite service; He has committed some work to me which He has not committed to another. I have my mission .... Therefore I will trust Him. Whatever, wherever I am, I can never be thrown away or merely consumed in futility. If I am sick, my sickness may serve Him; in perplexity, my response to that perplexity will result in glory of Him; if I am in sorrow, my sorrow may even serve Him. My sickness, or perplexity, or sorrow may be the necessary components of some great end, which is now quite beyond us. He is a practical God and permits nothing to be spent in vain.

THE STORY OF THE WAY OF CHRIST
The three day look at New Testament Christianity originated
as the "Cursillo®" movement
in the late 1940s in the Spanish Catholic church and moved to America
in the late 1950s. The Lutheran church developed its own version
of the weekend, Via de
Cristo, when laymen and clergy attended a Catholic Cursillo in 1971.
Church of the Brethren and Brethren Church believers in Indiana attended Via de Cristo weekends and then with the help of their sponsors started the anabaptist/believers church movement called the Brethren Way of Christ in Indiana.
Mennonite, Church of the Brethren, and Brethren Church believers in Illinois attending Brethren Way of Christ, Cursillo, Emmaus Walk, Tres Dias, and Via de Cristo weekends have felt the nudging of the Spirit to make this tool for equipping believers for their journey of faith and life in the congregation their own. And with the encouragement and support of these movements the Way of Christ has developed.
